What is Kashmiri Pandit Exodus -
Under these circumstances most Kashmiri Pandits took whatever goods they could carry with them, and whatever they could use to save their lives. Whatever could have been done was done, somehow Kashmir Pandits escaped from there hiding in the tarpaulin of trucks, filling buses and rental taxis saving their life and honor, Mass exodus began. The government, intellectuals, absolute litigants, those who have goodwill towards the country, everyone's inner soul had gone to sleep. No one was willing to speak about it. In the days after 19 January 1990, the Kashmiri Pandits were murdered and tortured, after the gang rape of teacher Giriraj Tiku in Bandipura she was killed. Hundreds of such things were becoming common. Entire books can be written on this, how people were being tortured by terrorists, and how the administration was becoming a silent spectator and ignoring the atrocities on Kashmiri Pandits. By 1991, most Pandits fled the valley and were kept camps full of thorns and dusty tents, in inaccessible places in Jammu. More than 8000 families migrated, and were placed in camps that did not even have basic facilities like toilets. A family was allotted a tent in which 10 members each slept together, with an extreme lack of privacy. A large number of deaths occurred due to illness in these camps, mostly due to snake bite and extreme cold.
In january of 1990 a massacre took place in the hilly regions of kashmir valley. Kashmiri Pandits (A Caste of Hindu Priest who natively belong to Kashmir region) and their families were murdered, raped and they were made homeless and were forced to leave their valley. The incident was horrible in all aspects. The following Paragraph shows the situation of those pandits at that time and describes the incident in brief, have a look at it.
What was The Complete Incident?
Kashmiri Pandits were true believer of the spirit of Indianness. They were peaceful, non-violent, secular, educated, law-honouring, patriotic citizen of this country. 30 Years ago, On 19 January, They were made homeless from their own homes, It's Their Story.
With the arrival of Sharad Ritu (Autumn Season) of the 1990s, Terrorists were dominant in Kashmir. The state government had abandoned all its responsibilities and there was no administration at all. The terror militant's decree had taken the Kashmir valley in its wrap, it seemed as if being an Indian was a rebuke, the terrorists were engaged in releasing the hit list. Every person who was pro-India was called "Mukhbir", killing him was called jihad, and It was virtuous. Major Kashmiri Pandits were already being targeted and killed. Social worker Tikalal Taplu was killed in a broad daylight in Srinagar. Neelkanth Ganju was shot at the center of market in Harinagar, and his body lay on the road for several hours. Lawyer Premnath Bhatt was brutally murdered in the Anantnag area in South Kashmir. The ruthless killings of countless unknown Pandits were carried out, the message was clear.
On 4th January 1990, Hizbul Mujahideen published a press release in the Aftab newspaper and asked all Hindus to leave the valley, another newspaper alsafa also published the same communique, soon these notices were pasted on the doors of Kashmiri Pandits. On that fateful night of January 19, 1990, Kashmir felt as if darkness had taken the light in its lap, every voice that was raised from every corner of Kashmir, from every nook, from every street, from every market, from every village was a message of death for the Pandits. Millions of people descended on the streets of Kashmir and were evoking poisonous slogans, which had never been heard or seen before, it was being announced from mosques in whole Kashmir that Kashmir would become Pakistan, and Slogans praising Mujahideen were also being raised. Rifles were being waved openly in the crowd. "jaago jaago subah hui roos ne baazi haari hai, hind pe ladd rha tari hai, ab kashmir ki baari hai(Wake up, Russia has lost in the morning, now the fight is in Hind, now is the turn of Kashmir)" This song was played again and again from the mosques. If you want to live in Kashmir, you have to say "Allah Hu Akbar", "Aye Zaalimon, Aye Kaafiron Kashmir Hamara Chhord Do (The merciless, the infidels leave our Kashmir)" The series of such slogans were not taking the name of pause. When one was stopped the other was started. Among these slogans was a slogan "Kashmir Banega Pakistan Pandit aadmiyon ke bagair, Par Pandit aurton ke saath (Kashmir will become pakistan, without pandit men, but with pandit women)" This slogan was raised repeatedly and loudly. Now our fear had taken a new form, the families hid the women in the store rooms, and it’s needless to say that they would set themselves on fire when the mob attacked, there was no fear of that night. Disappointment was such that there was no end, the message was clear "Raleev, Galiv or Saliv (either join us, or die, or run away)”. There was not a single village, Area, street, or a place where these slogans were not raised.
Kashmiri Pandits were left to die, thousands of houses of Pandits, hundreds of temples were burnt, and demolished. All this was happening in a multicultural, secular India. The small number of pandits who were still living in the valley were massacred with them, the terrorists did not spare even 2 months old children. The entire village of the pandits was cleared, till date not a single person has been convicted. The punishment for those murders and massacre of thousands of pandits is far from over, no one has even shown such concern over carnage and migration. The houses of those Kashmiri Pandits are deserted, the temples are impure, everything is about to collapse. Even after 30 years, Kashmiri Pandits still live in refugee camps on the outskirts of Jammu and where they are not being given much help. In today's generation of social media, when almost everything is available at the tip of the finger, the citizens of our country still face the plight in their own country and they are left to their own condition, all of them despite this, they hope to have justice with them.
